Running and Cycling in Cramlington
A guide to running and cycling in and around Cramlington: the town's traffic-free cycleways and old wagonway lines, National Cycle Route 725 to Blyth, trails at Plessey Woods and Northumberlandia, nearby parkruns at Blyth Links and Rising Sun, and local bike shops.
Cramlington is a better place to run and ride than its busy main roads suggest. The new town was planned with a network of footpaths and cycleways that keep you away from traffic, there is a national cycle route heading for the coast, and two of the best outdoor spaces in south east Northumberland are on the doorstep. This guide covers where to go, the nearest parkruns and where to get your bike sorted.
The town's cycleways and wagonways
Cramlington's estates are linked by a network of shared paths and cycleways, most of them separate from the roads, with underpasses beneath the busier routes. Some follow old industrial lines: one cycleway north of the Westerlink follows the route of a former colliery wagonway, a reminder of the coal mining that shaped this part of Northumberland. In 2020 Northumberland County Council added new signposts to help people find their way around the paths and cycleways.
For runners, these paths are ideal for a traffic-free loop from your front door, linking parks such as Alexandra Park and Valley Park. Our parks and green spaces guide covers both.
National Cycle Route 725 to Blyth
National Cycle Network Route 725, part of the Great North Cycleway, runs from Darlington to Blyth and passes north east through Cramlington on its way to the coast. The route was established in 2011 and some sections are still incomplete, so check a current map before a longer ride.
Heading east, a cycleway runs from Cramlington beside the A1061 towards South Beach in Blyth, where it meets National Cycle Route 1, the Coast and Castles route. That makes a ride to the seaside, and a run along the coast in either direction, an easy day out from town.
Plessey Woods Country Park
Plessey Woods Country Park, off the A192 at Hartford Bridge, has paths through woodland, meadow and along the River Blyth that are shared by walkers, cyclists and horse riders. It is a good spot for a trail run, with the Woodland Trust noting a wide, firm path through the woods and along the river. Expect mud in winter and spring, and give way to walkers and riders on the narrower sections. Our walks guide describes the main loops in detail.
Northumberlandia
The paths around Northumberlandia on Blagdon Lane make a varied run, with four miles of footpaths on and around the landform and a climb to the head for the view. The site is open from dawn to dusk. It is a popular place for walkers and families, so it suits a steady run more than a fast session.

For younger riders, the pump track at Alexandra Park opened in 2026 and is a looped circuit of rollers and banked turns for bikes, scooters and skateboards. See our skate parks guide for details.

Tips for running and riding safely
- Be seen: wear lights and reflective kit if you head out on dark winter evenings.
- Share the path: most routes are shared with walkers, dog walkers and, at Plessey Woods, horse riders. Slow down and ring a bell when passing.
- Check the route: parts of NCN 725 are incomplete, so plan longer rides with an up-to-date map.
- Get there without a car: see our getting around guide for buses and trains towards Blyth and Newcastle.
