Best Gyms in Cramlington

Where to train in Cramlington, from the pool, gym and classes at Concordia Leisure Centre to a 24-hour PureGym by Manor Walks and the Hammer Strength and Eleiko kit at Vision Health and Fitness on Crowhall Road.

Cramlington.live·

Cramlington has three quite different places to work out. Concordia Leisure Centre in the town centre pairs a gym with a pool, classes and a spa. PureGym, by Manor Walks, is a budget chain gym that never closes. And Vision Health and Fitness on Crowhall Road is a big independent gym built around serious strength equipment. Which one suits you depends on whether you want a swim with your workout, the freedom to train at 3am, or a squat rack and a deadlift platform.

Opening hours, prices and offers below come from each gym's own website at the time of writing. Gym prices change often, so check before you sign up.

Concordia Leisure Centre

Concordia Leisure Centre on Forum Way is the town's main leisure centre, now run by Places Leisure in partnership with Northumberland County Council. Alongside its modern gym there are fitness studios, including an indoor cycling studio, a sports hall, squash courts, a thermal spa, bowling, soft play and a cafe.

The big draw is the pool. Concordia's 25-metre free-form pool hosts lane swimming, family sessions and Aqua Fit classes, so you can lift, swim and take a class on one membership. At the time of writing, Places Leisure lists a Premium membership (gym, swim and classes) from £42 a month, a swim-only membership from £30 a month and a Premium membership for 16 and 17 year olds from £17 a month.

The centre opens from 6.15am to 8pm Monday to Friday, 8am to 6pm on Saturday and 8.15am to 6pm on Sunday. It is next to the Hub at Cramlington and the library, a short walk from Manor Walks and the bus station.

Best for: The only gym in town with a pool, spa and cycling studio under one roof.

PureGym Cramlington

PureGym Cramlington is at Unit 1A, Manor Walks, on the retail park side near Dunelm and Pets at Home. It is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and PureGym says there is free parking on site.

The gym has a functional training area with a sled track, treadmills and other cardio kit, free weights and benches, rigs, fixed pin-loaded machines, a stretching area and a group exercise studio. Classes are included in the membership, with Core members able to book eight days ahead, and personal trainers work from the gym.

At the time of writing, PureGym lists its Core membership at £25.99 a month plus a £15 joining fee, with no contract, so you can cancel at any time. The Plus membership adds access to other PureGym gyms, longer advance class booking and guest passes. There is no phone number; PureGym handles enquiries by email and online.

Best for: The pick for shift workers and night owls: open around the clock, with no contract.

Vision Health and Fitness

Vision Health and Fitness on Crowhall Road is an independent gym with one other club, in Gateshead, and one membership covers both. Its website describes the Cramlington gym as "30,000 sq ft of training heaven".

This is the one for strength training. There is a full range of Hammer Strength plate-loaded and pin-loaded machines, an S.B.D area with Eleiko benches, squat racks, deadlift platforms and plates, a mirrored dumbbell area running from 2.5kg to 60kg, a core zone and cardio kit including StairMasters and ski-ergs. A protein bar sells shakes and snacks. The class timetable includes Hyrox, HIIT, BoxFit, circuits, boot camp, CycleFit, yoga and Pilates, all included in the membership.

At the time of writing, Vision lists a contract membership at £10 for the first month, then £24.99 a month for an initial 12-month term, and a Freedom membership at £29.99 a month that can be cancelled at any time. There is also a junior membership for 14 and 15 year olds at £14.99 a month, and Vision says it does not charge a joining fee. You can claim a free pass through its website before you commit. Opening hours are not published on the site, so call 01670 432 232 to check.

Best for: Serious strength kit, from Hammer Strength machines to Eleiko platforms.

Tips for choosing a gym in Cramlington

  • 24-hour access: only PureGym is open around the clock. Concordia opens at 6.15am on weekdays, which still suits most early starts.
  • Contracts or no contract: PureGym's Core and Vision's Freedom memberships have no long-term commitment. Vision's cheaper rate comes with a 12-month initial term, so read the terms before signing.
  • Joining fees: PureGym charges a £15 joining fee at the time of writing unless a promotion is running, while Vision says it charges none.
  • Classes: all three include classes. Concordia and Vision both run indoor cycling, and Vision has the widest strength and conditioning timetable.
  • Swimming: Concordia is the only one of the three with a pool, and its Premium membership covers gym, swim and classes.
  • Teenagers: Concordia has a Premium membership for 16 and 17 year olds, and Vision has a junior membership for 14 and 15 year olds.
  • Trying before you join: Vision offers a free pass through its website, and PureGym has no contract, so you can leave after a month if it is not for you.
