What to Do When Someone Dies in Cramlington
A calm, practical guide to the first steps after a death in Cramlington: what happens at the hospital, registering the death at the Hub on Forum Way, choosing a funeral director, cremation and burial, and where to find support.
Losing someone is one of the hardest things any of us go through, and it can be hard to know what to do first. There is no right way to grieve and no need to rush. This is a plain, practical guide to the steps that usually follow a death in Cramlington, and to the local services that can help. Take it at your own pace, and lean on family, friends and the support services listed at the end.
The details below were checked against Northumberland County Council, Northumbria Healthcare and GOV.UK in November 2026. Processes can change, so follow the official links for the latest.
In the first few days
What happens first depends on where the person died.
- At home or somewhere else in the community. Call the person's GP practice. Out of hours, call NHS 111. If a death is sudden or unexpected, or you are not sure the person has died, ring 999.
- In hospital or a care home. The staff there will guide you through the immediate steps and tell you what happens next.
A doctor first confirms the death. In England, an independent senior doctor called a medical examiner then reviews the cause of death. The medical certificate of cause of death is sent straight to the register office, so you do not need to collect it.
Once the death has been confirmed you can contact a funeral director whenever you feel ready. They can bring the person into their care at any hour, and there is no obligation to arrange everything at once. Most of what follows can wait a little.
If the person died at the hospital
If the person died at Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital on Northumbria Way, or at another Northumbria Healthcare hospital, the Trust explains that a medical examiner officer will contact the family, normally within two working days, to talk through the cause of death. The doctor and medical examiner then complete the medical certificate and send it electronically to the registrar, so there is no need to go back to the hospital to collect anything.
If you would like to see the person, the Trust says viewings at the hospital are by appointment, usually on weekdays, and can be arranged by calling the switchboard on 0344 811 8111 and asking for the mortuary team. Many families choose instead to visit at their funeral director's chapel of rest. The Trust's palliative and end of life care pages set out the process in full, and our practical guide to the hospital covers getting there and parking.
Registering the death
Cramlington has its own register office. Deaths are registered face to face, by appointment, at Cramlington Register Office in the Community Hub on Forum Way, the town-centre building that also houses the library. You can also use any other Northumberland register office, such as Ashington Town Hall or County Hall in Morpeth.
You can book online through the council's website or by calling 0345 600 6400. The council asks you to register within five days of the medical certificate reaching the registrars where possible. If you need more time, tell the register office straight away.
It helps to bring, or at least know:
- the person's full name and any other names they used
- their date and place of birth, last address and last occupation
- details of their husband, wife or civil partner, if they had one
- their NHS number, if you have it
- their birth certificate, and their marriage or civil partnership certificate if relevant
There is no charge to register a death. Each certified copy of the death certificate costs £12.50, and it is worth asking for several, as banks, insurers and the probate process often each want one. The registrar will also give you the certificate for burial or cremation (often called "the green form"), which you pass to your funeral director.
Best for:
If the death has been reported to the coroner, registration works differently and may take longer. Northumberland's registrars ask families in that situation to email deathregistration@northumberland.gov.uk with the person's name, the date and place of death, and a contact phone number, and they will explain the next steps.
After the appointment you will receive a reference for the government's Tell Us Once service, which lets you report the death to most government departments and the council in one go. The council also points families to Settld, a service for letting banks, utility companies and other organisations know. For the latest details, see Northumberland County Council's register-a-death page and GOV.UK's guide to what to do after someone dies.
Arranging the funeral
Cramlington has two funeral directors of its own:
- Cramlington Family Funerals is an independent, father-and-son firm based in the old Rex cinema on Front Street, Klondyke. It is a member of both the National Association of Funeral Directors (NAFD) and the National Society of Allied and Independent Funeral Directors (SAIF), and says it is available 24 hours a day.
- Co-op Funeralcare Cramlington is at Manor Cottage on Forum Way, the same road as the register office. It has been part of the Co-op since 1997 and has parking on site.
Choosing a funeral director is a personal decision, and it is always fine to phone more than one and ask for a written estimate. Both firms publish information about their options online, but costs depend on the choices you make, so we have not quoted prices here. If you would like to look further afield, the NAFD and SAIF both have searchable lists of members. If money is a worry, ask early about a simple funeral and about the government's Funeral Expenses Payment, which may help if you receive certain benefits.
Cremation and burial
The nearest crematorium is Blyth Crematorium on Cowpen Road, run by Northumberland County Council and a short drive east of the town. Your funeral director will book the service time for you.
Westerleigh Group is building a new crematorium, the Great North Crematorium and Memorial Gardens, off Arcot Lane on the western side of Cramlington. At the time of writing it was still under construction and no opening date had been confirmed, so ask your funeral director whether it is taking bookings.
For burial, the council says all cemeteries in south-east Northumberland, including Cramlington's, are managed by Northumberland County Council, and its bereavement team can be reached on 01670 620405. Your funeral director will check the availability of graves, the fees and the cemetery rules before anything is booked. See the council's cemeteries page for more.
Church services
A funeral does not have to be religious, and your funeral director can help you find a celebrant if you would prefer. If you would like a church service, St Nicholas' Church in the old village is the Church of England parish church for Cramlington, and your funeral director can contact the church for you. If the person belonged to another church, speak to its minister. Our historic churches guide has more on the older ones.
Funeral flowers
A local florist can make wreaths, sprays and sympathy flowers, and will usually work with your funeral director on timings and delivery. In Manor Walks, Anna's Floral Design is an independent florist that has been trading for more than 25 years; ask them about funeral tributes.
Headstones and memorials
There is no hurry to arrange a memorial. Many families wait several months, especially for a new grave, so the ground can settle. When you are ready, a memorial mason will guide you on styles, materials and the rules of the particular cemetery or churchyard. Your funeral director can recommend masons who work in Northumberland's cemeteries.
Sorting out the estate
In the weeks that follow, someone will usually need to deal with the person's estate (their money, property and belongings) and, where there is a will, carry out their wishes. This often involves applying for probate. You can do some or all of this yourself, and GOV.UK's probate guide explains how. A solicitor can take on as much or as little as you would like, and our guide to solicitors in Cramlington lists local firms that handle wills and probate.
Support for you
Grief can come in waves, and it matters to look after yourself too. You do not have to cope alone.
- Cruse Bereavement Support, the UK's leading bereavement charity, runs a free helpline on 0808 808 1677 (check its website for opening hours) and has online resources.
- Samaritans: call 116 123, free, at any time of day or night, if you are struggling to cope.
- Marie Curie runs a free support line for anyone affected by death, dying and bereavement.
Northumbria Healthcare also runs a bereavement support service for adults after an expected death. It does not take self-referrals, so ask your GP or the palliative care team to refer you. Your GP can also put you in touch with local counselling. Be gentle with yourself; there is no timetable for grief.
Our bereavement hub brings together local funeral directors, the register office and support services. If anything here has changed, please get in touch.
