Cramlington.live·

Cramlington has a strong volunteering culture, from the weekly work parties in Valley Park to the town's award-winning litter-picking network. Whether you have a few hours a week, a morning a month or a particular skill to offer, there is probably a local group that would welcome you.

This guide covers the main opportunities in and around the town. We checked each one against the organisation's own website in November 2026. Most groups ask you to get in touch before your first session, and roles involving children or vulnerable adults will need safeguarding checks.

Cramlington Foodbank

Cramlington Foodbank is part of the Trussell Trust network and is run by St Nicholas' Church Cramlington. It works from the Hope Centre on Forum Way, giving emergency food parcels to people who have been referred with a voucher.

Volunteers keep it running. The foodbank lists roles in:

  • collecting and sorting donated food
  • packing food parcels
  • signposting people to other help
  • admin and data entry
  • the website, social media and corporate fundraising

The foodbank asks volunteers to commit to at least one three-hour shift a week, either 10am to 1pm or 1pm to 4pm, Monday to Friday. To find out more, call 01670 737808, email info@cramlington.foodbank.org.uk or use the volunteer page on cramlington.foodbank.org.uk.

If you cannot give time, you can donate food instead. The foodbank's website explains how to give.

Friends of Valley Park

Friends of Valley Park look after Valley Park, the long green corridor off Welbury Way. The group meets every Thursday at 10am at the Valley Park entrance sign, and its volunteers have:

  • cleared paths and picked litter
  • put up 36 bird boxes
  • planted 1,250 saplings and a 50-tree community orchard
  • monitored red squirrels with the Cramlington and District Red Squirrel Group

The group has won the #LoveCramlington Green Champions Award two years running. It is a good fit if you enjoy being outdoors and want some exercise, and no experience is needed. Email FOVPweb@gmail.com to get in touch.

Litter picking

Cramlington Town Council actively supports community litter picking, and in March 2026 it was named Outstanding Organiser in Keep Britain Tidy's Great British Spring Clean Awards 2025/26.

There are a few ways to take part:

  • Join a ward pick. Town councillors organise picks in their wards.
  • Join Cramlington Litter Pickers United, a Facebook group for local litter pickers that says new members are always welcome.
  • Run your own pick. The town council lends out litter-picking equipment if you fill in a request form on its website, and it will help publicise your pick.

Best for:

Never pick up needles or syringes. Report them to Northumberland County Council on 0345 600 6400 so they can be removed safely.

Youth groups

Scouts and Girlguiding sections in Cramlington are run by volunteers, and adult help is always welcome. You do not need to be a uniformed leader. Groups also need help with admin, fundraising, driving and occasional activities.

Cramlington has several Scout groups, including the 2nd Cramlington, 3rd and 5th Cramlington, 6th Cramlington and 7th Cramlington. For Rainbows, Brownies, Guides and Rangers, see Girlguiding Northumberland in Cramlington. Our Rainbows, Brownies, Cubs and Scouts guide has more on each section.

Cramlington Voluntary Youth Project (registered charity 1128037) is based at Middle Farm Buildings, NE23 1DN, and works with young people aged 8 to 19, and up to 25 for young people with special needs. Its Charity Commission return for the year to March 2025 lists 12 volunteers.

Hospital volunteering

The Northumbria Specialist Emergency Care Hospital in Cramlington has a meet-and-greet service, run by Northumbria Healthcare's volunteer service, Bright Northumbria. Meet-and-greet volunteers welcome patients and visitors and help them find their way around the hospital. To apply, see the volunteering pages on bright.northumbria.nhs.uk. Our Northumbria hospital guide explains the hospital's layout and services.

Charity shops

Charity shops rely on volunteers to serve customers, sort donations and price stock. Ask in the shop about current vacancies. In Cramlington you could try the St Oswald's Hospice shop or the Oak Tree Animals' Charity shop. Our charity shops guide lists the others in the town.

Community centres

Community centres such as Beaconhill and East Hartford host clubs and classes run by local people. Ask at the centre if you would like to help with an existing group or start a new one.

Wildlife and conservation further afield

Northumberland Wildlife Trust runs volunteering across the county. See nwt.org.uk for current opportunities.
