Cramlington.live·

A good personal trainer can get you started safely, keep you going when motivation dips and help you work towards a goal, whether that is your first 5km, a stronger back or simply feeling fitter. In Cramlington most personal training happens inside the town's gyms, where trainers work with clients on the gym floor, but there are also coached small-group sessions.

Personal trainers set their own prices and availability, so the details below come from each provider's own website at the time of writing. Ask about qualifications, insurance and what a first session involves before you book.

PureGym Cramlington

PureGym Cramlington at Unit 1A, Manor Walks has the largest team of personal trainers in town that we could find. Its website lists four PTs at the Cramlington gym, with specialisms that include strength and conditioning, sport-focused coaching, posture work, functional movement, toning and muscle growth, weight loss and working with clients with specific needs.

Each trainer has a profile on the gym's personal trainers page, which is the place to compare specialisms and get in touch, and prices are agreed with the trainer. The gym itself is open 24 hours a day, which gives you and your trainer plenty of flexibility over session times. Ask whether you need a PureGym membership as well as paying for sessions.

Best for: The widest choice of trainers, with profiles you can compare online before you get in touch.

Concordia Leisure Centre

Concordia Leisure Centre on Forum Way offers personal training through Places Leisure, which runs the centre. Places Leisure says "Personal training is all about you" and lists a range of packages and prices, so you can choose how many sessions suit you.

Training at Concordia means you can mix gym work with the 25-metre pool, the indoor cycling studio and the class timetable on one Premium membership. Places Leisure's fitness page also points to its Activate and Focus programme, exercise referral and Move Through Menopause support, which are worth asking about if you have a health condition or are coming back to exercise. Ask at reception or call 01670 620200 for current personal training prices.

Best for: The pick if you want a trainer plus a pool, classes and a spa in one place.

Curves Cramlington

Curves Cramlington on Admiral Business Park is a women-only club built around a 30-minute circuit that combines strength training, cardio and stretching on hydraulic machines. It is not one-to-one personal training, but Curves says a coach is present at every session to guide you, check your form and adjust the intensity, which gives you some of the support of a trainer in a group setting.

The club opens on weekdays only, from 8.30am or 9am to midday and from 4pm to 7pm, and is closed at weekends. You can book a trial session through the Curves website, or call 01670 712941.

Best for: Coached sessions for women who want guidance without booking a personal trainer.

How to choose a personal trainer

  • Start with your goal. Weight loss, strength, sport and rehab after an injury all suit different trainers. Most PT profiles list specialisms, so look for a match.
  • Check qualifications and insurance. Ask what qualifications a trainer holds and whether they are insured before your first session.
  • Ask about a consultation. Many trainers offer an initial chat or assessment, which is a good way to see whether you get on.
  • Understand the costs. Check whether you also need a gym membership, and whether sessions are sold singly or in blocks.
  • Recovering from an injury? A physiotherapist may be a better first step. Our physiotherapists guide lists local clinics, and our massage guide covers sports massage.
