St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Annitsford

Grade II listed Catholic church of 1906 at Annitsford, said to be modelled on Ostend Cathedral, part of the parish of St Paul's, Cramlington.

About St John the Baptist Catholic Church, Annitsford

St John the Baptist at Annitsford was opened by Bishop Collins on 22 June 1906, on the site of a Catholic mission founded in 1863. The parish priest, Father Chapman, took his Newcastle architect to Belgium, and the French Gothic church is said to be modelled on the rebuilt cathedral at Ostend. It was built on a concrete raft because of mining subsidence and is listed at Grade II.

Inside, the furnishings were made by Belgian craftsmen, including a tall carved reredos with painted panels of saints and a pulpit with figures of saints in niches. The church is part of one parish with St Paul's, Cramlington, in the Diocese of Hexham and Newcastle, which publishes current Mass times on its website.
