Date Night in Cramlington

Ideas for a date night in Cramlington: an award-winning Indian restaurant, Italian at Manor Walks, cocktails for two, a film at the Vue, a country pub near Northumberlandia and a walk to start the evening.

Cramlington.live·

Cramlington does not have a cocktail strip or a late-night restaurant quarter, but it has enough for a good evening out without driving into Newcastle. Most of the options cluster around Manor Walks, where you can eat, have a drink and catch a film within a few minutes' walk, with a couple of pubs and a walk on the edge of town for something quieter.

Opening hours, menus and offers change, so book ahead where you can and check times before you go.

Dinner

Dhamaka

Dhamaka at the Brockwell Centre is the most talked-about restaurant in town. It was named Restaurant of the Year at the 2023 Asian Restaurant Awards, and it has dedicated vegan options. Its website says it serves food to eat in and take away six days a week, and it takes bookings by phone, which is worth doing for a weekend table. The website also links to a separate drinks and dessert menu.

Best for: The pick for a special occasion, with booking advised.

Sambuca

Sambuca in the Glasshouse at Manor Walks is an Italian restaurant from the Sambuca group, with space for larger groups if the date turns into a double date. It is handy for the cinema next door, though it closes earlier than you might expect: our listing has it serving until 9pm Monday to Thursday, 10pm on Fridays and Saturdays and 8pm on Sundays.

Best for: Italian before a film, a short walk from the Vue.

Lal Qila and Mandarin Bay

On Dudley Lane, two long-standing neighbours offer a more relaxed evening. Lal Qila is an Indian restaurant with a loyal local following, and Mandarin Bay serves Cantonese, Malaysian and Thai dishes, with an all-you-can-eat menu on Friday and Sunday nights.

Best for: Two familiar favourites side by side on Dudley Lane.

Drinks

Cramlington has no dedicated cocktail bar, so cocktails mean a cafe bar or a pub. The best bet is Coltello Lounge on Manor Walks' South Mall, part of the Loungers group. Its Lounge Cocktail Club offers two of the same cocktail for £13.25 every day from 5pm until close, and it stays open until 10pm Sunday to Thursday and 11pm on Fridays and Saturdays. On Tuesdays there is a tapas offer from 5pm, which works as a lighter dinner.

If you prefer a pub, the Plough in the old village has a quieter lounge alongside its main bar and the widest choice of cask ale in town. Our guide to the best pubs in Cramlington covers the rest.

Best for: Cocktails for two at Coltello Lounge from 5pm.

A film

Vue Cramlington at Manor Walks has nine screens showing the latest releases. With Sambuca and Coltello Lounge a short walk away, dinner, a drink and a film can all happen without moving the car.

Best for: Dinner and a film without leaving Manor Walks.

A walk and a country pub

For something slower, start with a walk at Northumberlandia, the huge landform sculpture of a reclining woman on the edge of town. The paths loop up and around her, with wide views on a clear evening, and the Northumberlandia Cafe, run by Northumberland Wildlife Trust, serves hot drinks and snacks when it is open. Our guide to visiting Northumberlandia has the practical details.

Afterwards, the Snowy Owl on Blagdon Lane is close by. It is a Vintage Inn with rooms, which CAMRA lists as open until 11pm Monday to Saturday and 10.30pm on Sunday, with a garden for warmer evenings.

Best for: A walk with a view, then dinner at a country pub.

Nearby: Seaton Delaval Hall

A short drive east, Seaton Delaval Hall is a National Trust Baroque country house with gardens near Seaton Sluice. It suits a daytime date, perhaps followed by dinner back in Cramlington. Check the National Trust website for opening days, as they vary through the year.

Planning tips

  • Book the restaurant first. Dhamaka and Sambuca are the most likely to be busy on a Friday or Saturday.
  • Mind the early closing. Many Cramlington restaurants stop serving by 9pm or 10pm, so plan a film after dinner rather than before.
  • Taxis. If you are both drinking, book a taxi home in advance at weekends. Our guide to getting around Cramlington without a car has more on buses and trains.
