Stephenson Steam Railway

Railway museum on Middle Engine Lane, home to George Stephenson's locomotive Billy, with heritage train rides on scheduled days and the Ale by Rail beer festival in summer.

About Stephenson Steam Railway

Stephenson Steam Railway on Middle Engine Lane tells the story of the railway age that George and Robert Stephenson helped launch in North Tyneside. Its collection includes George Stephenson's locomotive Billy, a forerunner of the Rocket, alongside exhibitions on how trains work. It is managed by North East Museums, entry to the museum is free, and on scheduled days visitors can ride a heritage train for a fare.

The North Tyneside Steam Railway Association runs Ale by Rail at the museum, a summer beer festival held at the museum site; the 2026 edition was on 15 August. The museum is about 20 minutes' drive south-east of Cramlington. Details were checked in November 2026.
