Learning to Drive in Cramlington

A practical guide to learning to drive in Cramlington: the nearest theory and practical test centres at Newcastle, Gosforth and Blyth, current DVSA fees, and three driving schools that teach in the town.

Cramlington.live·

Cramlington is a good place to learn to drive. The town's distributor roads, roundabouts and estate streets give learners plenty of practice without city-centre traffic, and the A19 and A189 are on the doorstep for faster roads once you are ready. There is no test centre in the town itself, but the nearest ones at Gosforth and Blyth are a short drive away.

This guide covers the steps from provisional licence to practical test, the nearest test centres, the current official fees and three driving schools that teach in Cramlington. We checked the test centres and fees on GOV.UK in November 2026.

The steps to a full licence

  1. Get a provisional licence. You can apply from 15 years and 9 months old, and start driving a car on the road at 17. It costs £34 to apply online at GOV.UK.
  2. Take lessons. Practise with a qualified instructor, and with a family member or friend if you can. They must meet the legal rules for supervising a learner, and you need L plates and insurance.
  3. Pass the theory test. It has a multiple-choice section and a hazard perception section, and costs £23.
  4. Pass the practical test. It costs £62 on a weekday, or £75 for evenings, weekends and bank holidays. Tests starting from 4:30pm count as evening tests.

Best for:

Only book theory and practical tests through the official GOV.UK service. Unofficial booking websites look similar but usually charge more for the same test.

Theory test centre

The nearest theory test centre to Cramlington is in Newcastle, at Suite B, Fourth Floor, Tyne House, The Side, NE1 3JA, near the Quayside. Trains from Cramlington to Newcastle take around a quarter of an hour, so you can get there without a car.

Gosforth is the nearest practical test centre to Cramlington, on Sandy Lane at the northern edge of Gosforth. GOV.UK lists it as wheelchair accessible. Blyth is the other nearby option for car tests, and is worth considering if Gosforth has no slots for weeks.

Learners usually take their test at the centre their instructor knows best, so ask your instructor which they recommend and practise on the roads around it. Motorcyclists need to look further afield, to centres such as Gateshead.

Driving schools that teach in Cramlington

Instructors come to you, so a driving school does not need premises in the town. We found three that say they cover Cramlington, and checked each against its own website in November 2026.

G.E.A.R.S School of Motoring is a family-run school based in Cramlington, and says it has been teaching since 1988. It also covers Morpeth. Call 01670 590729.

True-Drive Automatic Driving School

True-Drive is an automatic-only school based in Blyth. Its website lists Cramlington, East Cramlington and Annitsford among the areas it covers. Call 07941 777131.

Best for: learners who want to drive an automatic.

Signature School of Motoring

Signature School of Motoring has offices in Ashington and Hazlerigg, and a dedicated page for lessons in Cramlington, offering both manual and automatic. Call 07487 222761.

Best for: learners who have not yet decided between manual and automatic.

Manual or automatic?

If you pass your test in an automatic, your licence only lets you drive automatic cars. If you pass in a manual, you can drive both. Some learners find an automatic quicker to master, and electric cars are automatic, which is one reason more learners now choose one. Think about what you are likely to drive in the next few years before you decide.

Choosing an instructor

  • Check they are approved. A paid instructor must be a DVSA approved driving instructor (ADI) or a trainee with a licence. ADIs display a green badge in the windscreen, and trainees a pink one.
  • Ask about prices and block bookings. Lesson prices vary, and many schools offer a discount for booking a block of lessons. Ask what happens if you need to cancel.
  • Ask about the test. Find out which test centre the instructor uses and whether you can use their car for the test.
  • Try a lesson first. You will spend many hours with your instructor, so it is worth making sure you get on before you book a block.
